Waxwing Lures
Sometimes an unconventional lure design is all that’s needed to have the fish lining up to have a crack, and you certainly get that with the Shimano Waxwing.
This lure has been a big hit overseas and won the best new hardbody lure category at the ICAST show in 2010. Preliminary testing has shown that Aussie fish think the design works just fine here too.
While the protruding wings do look quite radical, its what they do in the water that makes this patented lure such a standout. The belly fin gives the lure its stability, while the dorsal fin is where the action comes from. The lure has a jinking, zig-zagging motion through the water, but that fin throws in an irregular kick that just drives the fish nuts.
The chemically-sharp double point hook at the tail of the Waxwing rides uppermost, which affords the lure a degree of snag-proofing in shallow, rocky water or over weedbeds, as well as being prime position for a more secure hookup. The hook hangs on a continuous single wire, so the Waxwing is also capable of dealing with the nastiest of lure wreckers without falling apart.
Waxwings are also versatile enough to be jigged, trolled and cast, with the concealed weight in the chin contributing to casting distance as well as stability in flight.
The Waxwing is available in nine colours and features ultraviolet reactive paint on the lateral line to provide a more realistic look in the water. There are three size options — the 68 mm baby, the 88mm Boy and the 118 mm Junior.
