Shimano Introduces Lighter, More Powerful 2009 Saint Component Group
Redesigned Group Offers Riders More Options, Retains Legendary Toughness
Shimano combines design and engineering prowess with current riding trends in all-mountain, freeride and downhill and mountain bikes, in the lighter and incredibly durable 2009 Saint component group. The redesigned group follows the evolution of aggressive mountain biking, where riders are more focused on finding their flow on lighter more precise handling bikes. Highlights include a more powerful disc brake system, improved shifting from the new reinforced Shimano Shadow rear derailleur design, new Rapidfire Plus Shifters and lighter and stiffer Hollowtech II cranksets.
Since Saint made its debut in 2004, Shimano has equipped aggressive all-mountain and gravity riders with nearly indestructible parts that proved their reliability and durability by performing well in the most challenging conditions. The Saint group uses advanced Shimano technologies to add new features and functionality that save precious grams while retaining its legendary toughness.
Brake System Delivers More Stopping Power
The new Saint disc brake system yields 50% more stopping power!!! The Saint Hydraulic Disc Brake Caliper uses a 4-piston, dual-diameter design that accommodates more oil for better temperature management while maintaining superior modulation and improving pad wear. The new Saint Hydraulic Servo-Wave Brake Lever improves modulation and uses an intuitive tool-free brake lever reach adjustment for on trail adjustments. A redesigned brake lever blade incorporates a more solid ergonomic construction for a more comfortable and confident grip.
Advanced Shifting Systems Deliver Sniper-Like Precision
The new Saint Shadow Rear Derailleur uses the same Shimano Shadow low profile design that tucks into the rear dropout to avoid unexpected impacts, but the new Saint design is reinforced using a super-wide link design with a skid plate for a more rigid and durable structure. Spring tensions are revised for added response and controlled shifts while a mode converter allows versatility to fit cogset gear ratios that suit both downhill and all-mountain use. The new Saint Shadow rear derailleur is no longer mounted to the rear hub axle, saving 100 grams from the previous M800 version.
Saint RapidFire Plus shifters deliver crisp and precise shifting. The Saint shifters feature short-stroke, Instant Release Technology for an immediate shift. Two-Way Release action allows the release lever to be operated in two directions for a rider’s preference. These shifters have been developed with variable positioning that allow for inboard or outboard mounting.
The new Saint Front Derailleur is the first double specific mountain bike front derailleur, that can accommodate and accurately shift a wide 36X22 gearing. The new design allows for super wide tires, steep chainstay angles and less chain drag due to a compact, re-profiled cage.
Lighter and Stiffer Where it Counts
The Saint Hollowtech II Cranksets come in a single and dual chainring option. The new Hollowtech II crank arm and spider design is over 200% stiffer than Deore XT, yet lighter than original Saint M800 cranks. The Saint dual chainring crankset is Shimano’s first purpose built wide-range mountain bike crankset that offers superior shifting when combined with the new Saint and SLX double front derailleurs. This new crank arm design enables more ankle clearance while a new honeycomb bash guard improves impact resistance.
Saint Front Hub and Freehub components are both lighter and stiffer. The freehub is lighter by 100 grams and stiffer thanks to bearings being positioned wider apart and the freehub body was developed with Shimano’s Micro-Ratchet engagement technology enabling quick engagement. In both front and rear hubs, a standard sized center lock mount sheds weight while maintaining strength and sealing is increased by 400% from improved labyrinth seals.
